Part of Autism Anglia
FE Curriculum

The Doucecroft School Services curriculum is devised and adapted to meet the needs of pupils/students with autistic spectrum conditions. It takes into account the five outcomes of “Every Child Matters” The aim of the curriculum is to prepare all pupils to play their part in society where they may enjoy productive and independent lives to their full potential.

FE Curriculum (Post 16)

Post 16 education is offered on two sites meeting the needs of a wide range of students post 16. Before a place on either site is confirmed a thorough assessment of a student’s learning needs is made. The FE provision at Eight Ash Green is being developed in response to the needs of students, who, post 16 continue to require a safe, secure environment with facilities on site and a high level of staff support. The post 16 provision runs alongside that for Key Stage 4 and compliments that provided at the Kelvedon site. Students at Eight Ash Green follow ASDAN Towards Independence Award. This is a modular, externally accredited award which allows flexibility to both include personal interests and differing degrees of support.

ASDAN Towards Independence is made up of modular themes, modules can fit into more than one themed area.  These areas are covered over a three year period with activities covering more than one module.

Students post 16 at Eight Ash Green also benefit from the options offered at Key stage 4 and from an increased weighting given to Physical Education if appropriate.

At Kelvedon there is a three year rolling programme. Nine units of work are covered, three in each year of the provision.

In addition to this three year programme, key skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT, college and accredited courses are offered. At present accredited courses include ASDAN, OCR Adult Numeracy, Literacy and ICT, Trident Gold & Accreditation for Life & Living.

There are qualifications and awards to be gained through ASDAN Life Skills, ASDAN Towards Independence, ASDAN Numeracy in Everyday Life, Literacy in Everyday Life, Accreditation for Life and Living, Trident Gold Award, OCR Adult Literacy, Adult Numeracy, Adult ICT and AQA unit awards within the Further Education Provision. Also some of our students will be supported to take vocational and work related learning qualifications at other colleges. We work extensively to promote self awareness and self esteem in our students by encouraging communication, interaction and participation in age appropriate academic, sport, leisure and social activities and out and about in the wider community.

Work experience is a vital element in our curriculum for and some students will be doing a work experience placement that relates to their interests and abilities, in their last year with us. We liaise with Families, Connexions, Social Services, prospective employers and future placement providers to facilitate our students’ transition into their adult life and to ensure that all concerned parties are working to achieve that goal.
